Artist's Comments: I want suggestions as to how to improve on my techniques. My main problem is with drawing people. The picture I selected was drawn on watercolor paper (I'm an idiot) because I couldn't find a piece of regular paper big enough to draw it on. The artwork is of an original character of mine and the title is Two Spirits, One Heart

Lorelai's Profile Lorelai Says: The animals are nice, I think I see why you want help with people instead ^_^ So I'm going to give you pointers on the person. First, his/her neck is too short. It's almost nonexistent, see how it makes his head seem too heavy for his body? It's also at an unnatural angle, if the figure is looking UP that is fine, but you should see more of his/her chin/helmet underside if their gaze was upwards. What you did is a very basic way of "cheating," you made the figure look up but you didn't show us any new angles. It's similar to what the egyptians did; they turned the torso sideways, towards you, but placed the feet frontwards in walking motion...hence that awkward egyptian stance. You have a great concept of uniform and clothing design, keep that up. Be bold. Work on your drawing layout, you sort of mushed the contents of the picture together, which confuses the eye. If you plan to lay it out that way, at least use different colors so that we don't see a gray blobular shape from afar. Also, press on your coloring medium for darker shades, and use those darker shades at the edges of the figures so that you can round them out. Hmmm...what else...oh, one last thing. don't sign your picture in the middle. It's too obvious like that. Sign it int he corner, along a line, or not at all. My art professor once told me that a signature marks a picture as COMPLETELY FINISHED, and if it isn't near-perfect, it will really turn off experienced art viewers.

Sandara's Profile Sandara-3 Says: the most obvious... don't do that with the watercolor paper again ^__^ ( or if you do, use watercolor as your medium ) try to add shading to your coloring, usually ( unless your light source is from below ) the underside of everything will be darker than the top. other than that.... it's a nice wolf / eagle. ^_^

Young's Profile Young Wang Says: Color pencils! Wow, I haven't used color pencils in a while. If you have a photoshop type program, you might wanna use smart blur or some kind of blending technique to make the tones nicer. The shading on this is rather flat without any shadows so you might want to put those in in the future =} The colors are also not very dynamic... but adding shadows may change the way it looks. The way it currently is, everything seems muted, so it's hard to say. As for the image itself, I think the 'man's' neck is tilted at an odd ankle.. you may consider tilting it the other way in the future. =}
