Artist's Comments: in what i've managed to scrounge up concerning anime art from all over the web, this is one result: a favorite pencil drawing scanned, printed, inked with a 0.5 pen (all i could find), scanned again, and photoshopped based on a tutorial. what can i improve and what else can i try?

Merle Says: Well, two things stand out in my mind immediately when I see
this pic =} It's a nice pic, but it suffers from the same shading problem I see on
a lot of fanart. =} If an object is round, more than likely a shadow on it should
cover about 50% of the area on the object, unless you intend all the lighting on
the object to be shining directly towards it. Rei seems very flat still because
most of the shading is a sliver along her side =} I think if you added more
shading deeper into her, it'll make her look more in depth.
The second thing that occurs to me is that the lines seem a little rough. If you
scan in the image at a higher resolution, then create a new layer on top of the
existing layer but in the "multiply" mode of coloring, you can use the airbrush to
get rid of the greys near the black lines, making the black lines smoother. =}
Then after coloring, you resize it smaller.

Setsuna Says: Hee hee... what an interesting dress, very chic design. A few
things I'd like to note about the image are some fuzzy grayish dots all over the
image, probably some pencil (?) marks that the scanner didn't take out. I would
recommend using your image editing software to adjust brightness and contrast
settings to eliminate everything but the black lines before you begin coloring.
(The gray lines tend to be visible with the dark coloring of the dress) Also, use
the eraser tool to even out the lines, take out any extra stray marks (for example,
the small dark speckles on the lower right)

Hum~ I think your CGing is fine! It has rooms for improvements - but just like
everyone else's. ^^ I won't get too far into CG topic since at this point, your CG
improvements should depend on your own style and taste. But I do recommend trying
out more highlights. I like how you have the little highlight in one part of her
hair, but it's fun to use lots of them in one pic! Try it not just on hair, but
also on skin, costume, etc~ ^o^
Hum~ the proportions are a little off in her arms and hands. For grown up
characters, hands should be at least big enough to cover the face from the eyebrows
to the end of the chin~ And while her left arm (right from the viewer's point) has
the natural curve of a real human arm, the other arm is kinda unnatural. Try giving
it the smooth curve, too! And one last tip - study how to draw real people before/
as you learn how to draw anime! ^_^
