Artist's Comments: clarifying comments: I'll get away from portraits once I'm comfortable with them, and learn how to draw full-body and action. The drawing was done in pencil, inked, scanned, and colored in PhotoShop. I'm not sure if I'm technically a beginner or an intermediate, but this is only about the tenth fanart I've ever done... so I went with beginner.

NOTE from Lorelai: Mooncalf's comments above were not written for her picture. (picture was updated recently, whereas comments are from april.)

Dragonfly Says: Gah! Well my other critique got deleted, so I'm retyping this all up *grumble*

Anyway Mooncalf, I really like this character, I like that wolf in the background you did, as well as his wolf type feet ^^

As for the piece itself, I think you could improve on a couple of minor things. Firstly would be the position of his legs. I think positioning his right leg, more towards the back of the person, instead of going across his body, would make the pose look less awkward.

Also on the hand that is holding the Axe, I think he should be holding it fully, instead of resting his hand on it. Since the Axe would most likely fall to the ground, if you were holding it like that right? I'm not to sure, I don't exactly have a lot of axes here ^^;;;;

As for the coloring, I can't really comment on that since I'm not that skilled in it. I think maybe a better contrast between the shadows and light areas would help a lot. The shading you have here, especially on the skin, kinda blends in too much. But maybe someone with more coloring skills then me can offer some better advice.

keep up the good work!

Kon Says: Hiiiii Moooooooooncalf!!.. XD

Well.. overal.. not too bad. Hmmmm... The biggist improvment you can do IMO.. is the anatomy.. because he's errr.. half naked... it's an even more important issues for this pic. The anatomy is a bit odd. His head proportion is more of child's. The eyes are a bit large and doesn't quite fit the proportion of the rest of the body.... which is more of a "normal" male. The shading is not bad... but.. and this is more of a personal preferences.. is to add even more contrast. Darker shadows and lighter hightlights. Maybe even varied the colors more.. ie... add some subtle reds in various part of the skin.. for variety sakes.. =D

The little details you add, such as the wolf feet, claws, and neckalace, ring, etc... adds a lot of personality to the character.. =D

Ryuuzaki Says: Hiyas! Wow, you must've spent a lot of time on this! Welp, from the shading, it looks like the light source is coming from the front top. I don't see any major problems with shading. However, since you insist that your shading needs work, I'm guessing that you can only shade with the light source from the front top. This piece of advice goes for everything (shading, drapery, human figure, hair, EVERYTHING); copy. Yes. Copy. Copy out of magazines, manga, still lifes you make yourself, anything. Everyone learns by copying first, to get the feel of the lines. Once you feel confident that you've practiced enough, you can try to create your own pictures. That's my big piece of advice for today. Now here's some little nitpicky stuff...

Teenage and younger guys can have large eyes, but any older than that, guys generally have little slittly eyes. I don't see many problems with drapery in this picture, main because leather doesn't have very many folds. I do encourage you to take a look at male anatomy (I know, I suck at that too), cuz the arms look kind of odd. =) Hair is a tiny thing you can being to improve later. Don't worry bout hair details too much now.

Great job, and good luck in your future drawing!
