Artist's Comments: I think this is a cute pic, but I'm always open for some suggestions (besides learning better scanning techniques I mean)! ^_^

These are characters I'm using for a manga I'm working on. I'd planned to use pen and ink for all of my pics, but I accidentally bought some paper that didn't sit well with me and pen tips, so I just started drawing everything in pencil (it's cheaper this way anyway!). I usually like to draw charcters posing, but since I'm doing this manga, I've been drawing a variety of things. Of course, I have NO IDEA of what I'm doing, so some pics I drew look a little odd. Oh well...no one's perfect! ^_^

meriko Says: Woo, lotsa graphite~ ^^ That's one thing...if you're going to draw a manga, you're going to use about a million pencils a year if you dress everyone in medium/dark clothes and give them black hair. ^^;;; It also leads to much smudging and overall dark pages. With lots of portions shaded in dark, the outlines and boundaries tend to get blurred.

I see you've got distinct highlights on the hair, but there doesn't seem to be any highlighting/shading anywhere else, just shading in.

You might try crosshatching/slashing instead, to delineate shadows, and only shade in some parts.

Good luck with the manga!!!

Lorelai Says: Hoiiii!!! Wow, cooooool picture. I especially like the highlights in their hair and eyes, they're very confident and impressively correct (anime-wise) and it shows you have a good feel for your pencil. You have pretty nice shadows too. Now i might be completely wrong, but i kinda get the feeling that you are hesitant about bodies. First of all, this picture doesn't have any...second of all, there's a sort of stiffness in their faces I can't exactly put into words. I feel like you'd have a bit of difficulty drawing them in full-standing poses, 360 degrees around (front, back, 2/3, 3/4, 1/2 etc.) That might be something you want to practice...I guarantee that you'll need to be extremely comfortable with stuff like that if you want to draw a complete manga. Also, these characters have really nice hair...if it's an action flick sort of manga, their hair will be flipping around and blowing in the wind a lot, and thus it might be useful to learn how to draw it more flowy and less spiky. Umm sort of like Lodoss VS Dragonball...ne? ^_^;; Oh, one more thing, the girl on the right has really really long (but few) eyelashes...i'd suggest you increase the quantity and shorten the length. But that's just my own personal preference. Good luck! You're off to a great start.

Jen Zee Says: Hello Sketchess! ^_^ Cool name ^_~...! You're pic is cute, but with some little pointers, your sketch could be really cute! ^_^ Haha, okei, sorry...cheeziness...On with the critique!

Okay, first of all, what I'm noticing is that you have darker outlines for some parts of the characters, but not for the others... Some of the hair, and some of the faces seem to be missing outlines... It's not that bad, in this case, because it's in pencil, and pencil is a relatively easy medium to differentiate blocks with, but you may want to consider outlining the rest of the characters to keep things consistent. Secondly, you may want to try shading using layers, not 'strength'...When you colour using pressure, a lot of times you'll be able to see each section which you coloured even thoug they're part of the same area (i.e. the girl on the left's hair -our left ^^-, you can see a distinct overlap of pencil). It's usually better to make things smoother, and do layers at a time. Just colour the whole area with a comfortable amount of pressure, then go back and redo the whole thing, until you like how dark it is. It takes awhile to do, but your ending result will be much cleaner. Another thing is that it looks like you did smudging action ^_^ in some parts of your pic, but not in others! The hair on the right-side girl's pony tail almost looks like a fur tail because the rest of the hair in the pic has distinct light-refraction lines....Try to make the hair in the same way through the pic ^_^!

Overall, it's a really great pic, with nice composition, great facial expressions, and a nice idea!^_^ The thing you basically want to work on is consistency in the way you draw/colour etc. Hopefully this was of some use to ya' ^_^!
